In the cosmology of Central Africa's forest peoples, the boundary between human and animal is not fixed — it is a threshold crossed in ceremony, in dream, and in the wearing of the mask. This extraordinary zoomorphic mask, carved in the form of the bush pig (ngulu in many Bantu languages), belongs to a tradition in which the animal spirit is summoned, inhabited, and honoured.

The bush pig is no ordinary creature in Central African belief. Ferocious, nocturnal, and almost impossible to kill, it is associated with untameable wildness, ancestral power, and the forest's hidden dangers. Warriors and hunters wore masks such as this to absorb the animal's strength before a hunt or raid — to become, briefly and dangerously, something other than human.

The carving is visceral and immediate: a broad, protruding snout with deeply carved nostrils, wide-set eyes ringed in faded white pigment, and a textured surface aged to a deep reddish-brown patina from decades of handling and ritual use. The crown of wild raffia and bark fibre — streaked with red ochre — erupts from the head like a mane, completing the transformation from wood into living spirit.
